Instant moong dal halwa is a delicious, flavorful and melt in mouth winter dessert that can be easily prepared in no time using moong dal flour, milk, sugar and ghee. The traditional moong dal halwa is laborious to prepare so thought to share a quick way to prepare it which might be very easy for beginners too and needs no long wait time to relish the output. I wanted to start the blog for the year with a sweet recipe as usual so here is a simple yet delicious moong dal halwa with similar taste. This recipe requires no soaking and no grinding like CHANA DAL HALWA as it uses store bought moong dal flour in its making.
I made this halwa like this recipe BESAN HALWA and it turned out delish. You could adjust the sugar quantity as per your liking and instead of regular sugar you could use edible brown cane sugar or gur/ jaggery too. Also you could try adding few strands of saffron along with milk for additional flavor. This halwa can be made for upcoming Holi festival or for Diwali too. Do try it at home and let me know your feedback!!
- 1. Moong dal flour – ½ cup
- 2. Boiled milk – 1 cup
- 3. Sugar – ¼ to ½ cup
- 4. Ghee – 1/3 cup
- 5. Cardamom powder – ¼ tsp
- 6. Pistachios and Almonds – 1 tsp (chopped, for garnish)
- * 1 cup = 235 ml
- Heat ghee in a non stick kadai/ pan. To it add moong dal flour and roast it in low flame for about 8 minutes until nice aroma is released. Keep stirring moong dal flour every now and then to make sure it does not burn. After 8 minutes you will notice nice aroma from moong dal flour and also a mild color change.
- Now keep the boiled milk ready in one hand. Gradually add in small portion and stir the moong mixture well. I used ½ cup first then gradually increased to 1 cup.
- Stir it really well that it combines with the moong mixture. Cook this mixture for 3 to 4 minutes.
- Now add sugar and cardamom powder to it and mix really well until combined. Keep stirring the mixture and after 2 minutes of stirring add a tbsp of ghee. Combine the ghee in the moong dal mixture and keep stirring for 8 to 10 minutes. After 8 to 10 minutes you will notice halwa consistency approaching with sides leaving the pan, halwa aroma and slight color change. Now add the remaining ghee and mix well. Finally add the chopped nuts (I dry roasted the nuts in pan before adding to the halwa) as garnish and put off the flame. Yummy and tasty moong dal halwa is ready!
