Pista halwa/ Pistachio halwa is a delicious Indian dessert prepared with pista, milk, sugar and flavored with cardamom powder. Pistachio halwa is a rich and delicious dessert.
Pistachios are not only tasty to consume but are highly nutritious too. Adding in our diet once in while is good. We all have relished pistachios roasted, pesto sauce, katli, so thought share our version of pistachio dessert.
It is usually prepared at my MIL place during Eid. So thought to share this dimple yet delicious halwa recipe in the blog too.
This pistachio/ pista halwa can be prepared quickly with handful ingredients only. For this halwa I used regular sugar as it tastes good with that. We have never experimented making this halwa with jaggery. As the halwa loses its appetizing green color. Also I have not used khoya/ mawa in this recioe as I wanted to replicate my home style recipe here.
I have earlier shared recipe of Akhrot halwa which I prepared with jaggery. The procedure is almost similar; except pista halwa has soaking time. This pista halwa can be served in bowl or cut into squares and served.
So let’s get to the making of pista halwa!!!

how to make Pista halwa with step by step images
- Soak pistachios in 1 cup water for an hour. After an hour in a blender add soaked pistachios and ¼ cup water. Grind it to fine paste. Add milk in the blender. Blend everything well. Keep it aside.
- Heat 2 tbsp ghee in a kadai/ pan. To it add ground pista paste and sugar. Keep stirring the pista mixture continuously until thick. It can get burnt quick so keep stirring.
- When the mixture thickens and gets dough like consistency add cardamom/ Elaichi powder remaining ghee in regular intervals. Keep stirring and cook till you notice halwa consistency approaching with halwa separating the sides of the pan, halwa aroma and color change to pale green. You could also take small quantity and roll with your fingers. If you see non sticky ball then halwa is ready. All this should take about 20 to 25 minutes in total. Put off the flame. Serve it with chopped pistachios garnished on top.
