Idli manchurian is a spicy, slightly sweet, flavorful and delicious snack prepared by tossing tawa roasted crisp idli in sweet and spicy sauce. This is a Indo Chinese dish so it is very easy and quick to prepare just like manchurian recipe. This recipe works great if you have leftover idlis at home or feeling bored to prepare idli upma or eat idli with chutney, sambar and podi. Recently I posted another yummy but totally guilty yet scrumptious recipe with leftover idli like this IDLI FRY which can be relished once in a while.
For this recipe I tawa roasted the idlis but you could Air fry it too or deep fry it as well according to your liking. But remember to roast the idlis before adding it in the sauce otherwise it idlis will turn soggy. So let’s get to the making of Idli manchurian.
- 1. Idli – 4 (cubed)
- 2. Salt – to taste
- 3. Red chili powder – ½ tsp
- 4. Maida – 1 tsp
- 5. Rice flour – 1 tsp
- 6. Oil – 2 tsp (for roasting)
- 1. Onion – 1 (small sized, cut into cubes)
- 2. Chopped ginger and garlic – 1 tbsp
- 3. Green/ Red / Yellow capsicum – 1/3 cup (cubes)
- 4. Green chilli – 2
- 5. Ketchup/ Tomato sauce - 1 tbsp
- 6. Red chili sauce – 1 tsp
- 7. Soy sauce – 1 tsp
- 8. Salt – to taste
- 9. Spring onion – 1
- 10. Corn flour – 1 tbsp
- 11. Water – ¼ cup
- 12. Oil – 2 tsp
- * 1 cup = 235 ml
- Chop idlis into cubes as shown in the collage.
- In a wide bowl add chopped idli cubes, maida, corn flour, red chili powder and salt. Toss idli well to get nice coating of the ingredients. Heat oil in a pan to it add coated idli cubes and toss it well for even roasting. Roast it in medium heat. This should take about 3 to 4 minutes. When roasted put off the flame and and keep it aside.
- In a bowl add corn flour and 1/4 cup water. Mix well and keep the mixture/ slurry aside.
- Chop onion and green capsicum into cubes, make slit in green chilli and chop spring onion finely both white and green stalk. Heat a tbsp of oil in a pan to it add finely chopped garlic and ginger. Saute well in high flame.
- Now add chopped white stalk of spring onion and green chili. Saute well then add chopped onion cubes and capsicum cubes. Saute in high flame for few seconds.
- Now add salt, tomato sauce/ ketchup, red chili sauce and dark soy sauce. Mix well.
- Now add the cornflour mixture/ slurry and stir continuously. If required add ¼ cup water and mix well. Now add tawa fried idli and Toss it well in the sauce. When the idli chunks are well coated in sauce add chopped green stalk of spring onion. Put off the flame and serve it hot.
How to make Idli manchurian with step by step images
