Instant pot millet bisi bele bath/ Barnyard millet bisi bele bath is a scrumptious, wholesome and healthy one pot meal prepared by cooking millet, dal and veggies in freshly ground bisi bele bath powder then topped with tempering consisting of ghee, cashews and curry leaves.
Traditionally bisi bele bath is prepared with rice like this BISI BELE BATH which I have replaced with millets to keep it healthy as I always say and also to get back to the roots. This dish is almost same like the one I posted little earlier like INSTANT POT BARNYARD MILLET SAMBAR SADAM so you can try making it if you like Tamil Nadu sambar sadam with millets.

Back to the recipe I have used freshly ground powder like this Bisi Bele Bath Powder as I like the taste and freshness from the homemade ones but if you don’t have time you could get store bought ones too. Also I have not added green peas in the recipe but if you like you could add it. So let’s get to the making of Barnyard millet bisi bele bath!!
- 1. Barnyard millet/ Kuthiraivali – 1 ¼ cup
- 2. Toor dal – ½ cup
- 3. Carrot – 1 (small)
- 4. Green beans – 8
- 5. Drumstick - 8 pieces
- 6. Onion – 1 (small sized)
- 7. Tamarind – small gooseberry size
- 8. Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp
- 9. Bisi bele bath powder – 1½ tbsp (homemade)
- 10. Salt – to taste
- 11. Ghee/ Oil – 1 tbsp
- 12. Water – 5 cups (for instant pot)
- 1. Mustard seeds – ½ tsp
- 2. Curry leaves – a sprig
- 3. Dried red chilli – 2
- 4. Cumin seeds/ Jeera – ½ tsp
- 5. Cashews – 1 tbsp/ 5 nos.
- 6. Ghee – 2 tbsp
- * 1 cup = 235 ml
- Now put instant pot on SAUTE MODE high.
- Now add oil/ghee in the instant pot, then add chopped onion. Saute for few seconds then add all the chopped veggies. Saute it for few seconds say 30 seconds then add turmeric powder, salt and homemade bisi bele bath powder.. Saute well for another 30 seconds then add the tamarind extract. Mix well and add soaked millet, toor dal and 5 cups water. Mix everything well. Check for salt.
- Now switch off the saute mode. Put the lid and keep the vent to sealing position.
- Now press MANUAL/ PRESSURE COOK mode high. Make sure the Cook for 6 minutes. I cooked it for 6 minutes as I wanted the rice really mushy.
- After 6 minutes do either natural release for 15 minutes or quick release by putting the valve to venting position which releases steam immediately. Make sure to keep your face far from it and side ways as a huge amount of pressure will be released.
- Now open the lid and your rice dal and vegetables will be cooked perfectly. Just mix it once and millet dal mixture will get mashy. You will find perfect millet bisi bele bath with flowing consistency.
- Meanwhile switch on the stove, place heat oil/ ghee in a small pan add dry red chili, when it splutters add cashews, hing add curry leaves. Now pour this mixture to sambar sadam mixture in instant pot. Add little ghee and delicious millet bisi bele bath is ready!
- Wash barnyard millet and toor dal in water. Soak millet and toor dal together in water for 15 minutes.
- Soak tamarind in ½ cup warm water and extract tamarind juice and keep it aside. Chop veggies and keep it aside.
- Heat oil/ghee in a pressure cooker add chopped onion cubes. Saute well.
- When onions look sauteed add the chopped veggies ( carrot, beans and drumstick) Saute it for a minute then add turmeric powder, bisi bele bath powder and salt. Saute well for a minute then add tamarind extract. Mix well.
- Now add soaked millet and toor dal. Now add 3 to 4 cups of water and mix everything well. Check for salt. When the mixture starts to boil close the cooker lid and put whistle. Pressure cook in low to medium flame for 3 whistles.
- After 3 whistles and after the pressure has subsided completely open the cooker lid and you should see the the perfectly cooker millet, dal and veggies. If your mixture looks thick add a cup of water to loosen it up to get right consistency. When the mixture starts to boil put off the flame.
- Now heat a small pan to it add 2 tbsp of ghee to it add mustard seeds and dry red chili when it splutters add cashews, hing and curry leaves.
- Pour the tempering over bisi bele bath and mix it. Now delicious bisi bele bath is ready to be served with chips/ potato masala.
How to make Instant pot millet bisi bele bath with step by step images
- Wash and soak millet and toor dal in water for 15 minutes. This step is optional, but I like to do it this way as we can get mushy consistency easily.
- Soak tamarind in 1 cup warm water. Chop all veggies and keep it aside.
- Now put instant pot on SAUTE MODE high. Now heat oil in it and add chopped onion. Saute for few seconds then add all the chopped veggies. Saute it for few seconds say 30 seconds then add turmeric powder, salt and homemade bisi bele bath powder.. Saute well for another 30 seconds.

- Now add soaked millet, toor dal and 5 cups water. Mix everything well. Check for salt. Now switch off the saute mode. Put the lid and keep the vent to sealing position.
