Nethili fish fry/ Anchovies fry is a yummy deep fried starter/ appetizer/ snack that can be easily prepared with handful ingredients. This nethili fry starter is something people would love to order in restaurants just like
and now you can make it at home and serve it as snack also during this rainy/ cold season. Even yesterday I posted an easy to make appetizer like this PRAWN VADAI and hope everyone liked it. I have posted very few fish recipes earlier and these 3 are my personal favorites RAVA FISH FRY, FISH KUZHAMBU, AIR FRYER FISH PAKORA and FISH DUM BIRYANI.
Coming to the recipe, I have used medium size frozen nethili fish here which was free of tail/ head and cleaned well. If you can get fresh fish much better in taste and also will get cooked a bit faster so the cook time mentioned might differ a bit. Also when using any meat/ sea food always use turmeric powder to get rid of the smell. Also I have used egg white in the marination if you don’t like it you cold make it without egg whites too. So let’s get to the making!!

- 1. Nethili fish/ Anchovies – 15 nos.
- 2. Ginger garlic paste – 1 tsp
- 3. Chilli powder – ½ tsp+ ¼ tsp (add more depending on spice level)
- 4. Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp
- 5. Salt –to taste
- 6. Rice flour – 2 tbsp
- 7. Corn flour – 1 tbsp
- 8. Egg white – 1
- 9. Oil – for frying
- 10. Curry leaves - few
- * 1 cup = 235 ml
- In a bowl add cleaned and washed nethili fish, to it add ginger garlic paste, salt, chilli powder, turmeric powder, corn flour, rice flour and egg white. Mix well. Marinate for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
- After 30 minutes to 1 hour of marination, heat oil enough for frying. Make sure the oil is medium hot and not extremely hot which will make the exterior of the fry brown quickly and inside will be raw. When the oil is hot enough add marinated nethili fish coated in masala. Do not overcrowd, make sure to drop 6 to 8 fish only at a time. Fry it in medium flame for good 8 to 10 minutes until fully cooked. Do not keep stirring the fish as they will be fragile and might break. When both sides look cooked you could add some curry leaves in the same oil for taste and serve it hot curry leaves topped, lemon wedges and onion slices.
