Ellu sadam/ Sesame rice is a very quick and easy to make variety rice that can be made with freshly ground sesame podi/ ellu podi. This flavorful rice is a very popular kalavai sadam during purattasi, adi perukku and often offered as prasad/ neivedhyam in temples, also is made as quick lunch at home. Ellu sadam can be prepared with White sesame seeds/ Black sesame seeds and in this post I have made this ellu podi with white sesame seeds also used boiled rice for mixing the podi as I like its binding flavors. If you want your rice to be long you can use pachai arisi/ Raw rice. Also this sesame podi stays good for a week or 2 good in air tight container and can be used anytime to be mixed with cooked rice and relish it. I have also posted other variety recipes like these:

- 1. Sesame seeds / Til/ Ellu – ½ cup
- 2. Chana dal – 2 tbsp
- 3. Black urad dal – 2 tsp
- 4. Dry red chilli – 2 to 3 nos.

- * 1 cup = 235 ml
- In a pan dry roast, chana dal, black urad dal, dry red chili, curry leaves in low flame when roasted well add sesame seeds and roast it in low flame until it crackles and turns light brown. Allow the mixture to cool down completely. When the mixture has completely cooled transfer it to a blender, add salt. Grind into corse powder. Just pulse 2 to 3 times. If you pulse more the oil from sesame seeds will change the texture of the podi/ powder.
- Now heat 2 tsp oil in a pan to it add mustard seeds when it splutters add curry leaves to it add cooked rice and required amount of ellu podi according to your taste. Mix well and when everything combined check for salt. Put off the flame and serve it.
How to make Ellu sadam with step by step images
- In a pan dry roast, chana dal, black urad dal, dry red chili, curry leaves in low flame.
- When dal looks roasted well add sesame seeds and roast it in low flame until it crackles and turns light brown. When done put off the flame. Allow the mixture to cool down completely.
- When the mixture has completely cooled transfer it to a blender, add salt. Grind into corse powder. Just pulse 2 to 3 times. If you pulse more the oil from sesame seeds will change the texture of the podi/ powder.
