Barnyard millet adai maavu kunukku/ Kuthiraivali adai maavu kunukku is a yummy deep fried snack prepared either with leftover adai maavu/ freshly made maavu. At home amma always makes kunukku / fritter with leftover adai batter as it tastes even better than the freshly ground batter. So I have also made this kunukku/ fritter in the same. You can make some other interesting recipes with leftover idli batter too like these Idli batter Javvarisi bonda, Idli batter dhokla and Idli batter handvo.
Traditionally adai maavu kunukku is prepared with rice and lentils but to keep it healthy and to get back to the roots I started prepared adai with millets and they seem to to turn pretty soft and tasty. Trust me. I have been making adai with millets for the past 2 years and posted it recently and you can check the recipe here Barnyard millet adai. So had some leftover batter with which I prepared this snack and it was yummy.
So try making kunukku with millet adai batter and you will surely love it for its taste and mainly for its immense health benefits as it is rich in fiber, iron and is also less in calories compared to rice which is good right? So let’s get to the making!

- 3. Coconut pieces- 1 tsp
- 4. Curry leaves – few
- 5. Oil – for deep frying
- * 1 cup = 235 ml
- To the millet adai batter add chopped onions, coconut pieces and curry leaves. Mix it really well
- Now heat oil in a small frying pan. When the oil is just hot pour a ladle of adai batter in oil and cook it in medium flame. When the kunukku puffs and floats up in the oil flip it gently and cook. When both sides look cooked with even browning remove it from oil and transfer it to a plate with paper towel. Do not cook the kunukku in high flame as the inside wont be cooked. Repeat the process till all the batter is over. Serve the kunukku hot with a cup of tea/ coffee.
