Instant rava appam/ Sooji appam is a soft, spongy and delicious breakfast that can be prepared in just 15 minutes. Yes that’s right! This instant breakfast uses just 6 pantry friendly ingredients and requires no fermentation which is again a good news.
I am a great fan of appam and sometimes we have sudden crave for appam for breakfast in the morning but as we all know appam requires soaking, grinding and fermentation like these recipes Ragi appam, Barnyard millet appam, Rice flour appam, Appam with yeast which takes almost a day and sometimes we are lazy too/ uninterested in a worry about the fermentation when living in cold countries. This recipe solves all those problems as it will be made instantly.
So the credits to this awesome recipe definitely goes to youtube from where I got the idea. This rava appam has been super popular in youtube and wanted to try my hands on it as well. Every youtube channel has different procedures and measurements so I have made measurements that better worked for me. This rava appam can be served with plain coconut milk or with curries/ gravies like:
- Kadalai kurma
- Potato kurma
- Soya chunks kurma
- Veg kurma
- Egg kurma
- Egg thokku
- White vegetable kurma
- Chicken kurma

How to make instant rava appam with step by step images
- In a bowl add ½ cup Luke warm water, to it add yeast and sugar. Mix well and keep it aside undisturbed for 15 minutes or until frothy.
- Now in a blender add sooji/ rava, maida, required salt and 1 ½ cups of water. Blend it well into batter.
- Now pour the batter in a bowl and add the frothy yeast mixture. Mix well and keep the batter aside for 15 minutes. The water quantity mentioned is perfect the batter if it is too thin you wont get round shapes and will tear when taking from the pan. When the batter is thick it will be hard to get cooked. So add only the mentioned water quantity.
- After 15 minutes heat a tawa and pour 2 ladles of batter. Do not spread it with ladle just leave it like pancake/ uthappam. I din’t use oil to cook because I used non stick pan. When the bubbles start to form cook with lid on in medium flame for ½ to 1 minute. When it looks cooked remove from the pan and transfer it to a plate. Serve it hot with any kurma of your choice.
