Upma kozhukattai/ Steamed rice dumpling as the name goes is an easy and quick to make savory upma prepared with a shape using broken raw rice/ rice rava. Yes you heard it right upma with a shape! Rice rava/ broken rice rava is cooked, shaped and steamed making it a healthy breakfast. This kozhukkatai is prepared during GANESH CHATURTHI and also served as prashad in temples as well. This easily digestible and yummy dumplings can be served with simple coconut chutney/ pickle to enhance its taste or it can be eaten as it is.
Now it is lockdown situation and we all are unable to get access for many essential things, so thought this simple and easy to make breakfast prepared with basic ingredients available at home can make your work simpler and also give an idea. This dish can be served as snack as well. Also little grated coconut can be be added while mixing rice rava to add to its taste. So let’s get to the making!

- 1. Raw rice – 1 cup
- 2. Water – 2 ½ cups
- 3. Salt – to taste
- 1. Mustard seeds – ½ tsp
- 2. Chana dal – 1 tbsp
- 3. Cumin seeds/ Jeera – ½ tsp
- 4. Curry leaves – few
- 5. Hing – a punch
- 6. Oil – 1 tsp
- * 1 cup = 235 ml
- In a blender add raw rice and grind it coarse like rava. Keep this aside.
- Now heat oil in a pan to it add mustard seeds when it crackles add cumin seeds, chana dal, curry leaves and hing. We want dal to remain in yellow color only so do not roast it to golden brown. When aromatic add water snd required amount of salt. Allow it to boil well.
- Now to the boiling water add ground rice rava. Mix it well and cook the mixture in low to medium flame for 8 to 10 minutes with lid on. Keep a check on the pan every 3 to 4 minutes. If the rice is not cooked fully its fine as we will steam it.
- After 10 minutes when the mixture looks cooked put off the flame and allow the mixture to rest for 5 minutes so that it will be warm when handling.
- Meanwhile heat water in idli steamer. Grease a steaming plate with oil. Grease the palm with oil. Now when the mixture is warm enough take little portion of rice rava mixture in hand and make it into ovals/ balls. Repeat the process and place all the balls in steamer plate. Now place the steamer plate in idli steamer and steam it for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes when when kozhukattai looks cooked remove it from steamer and serve it hot with pickle or chutney.
How to make Upma kozhukattai with step by step images
