Vazhaipoo vadai/ Banana flower fritter is a deep fried lentil based snack very similar to the the taste of traditional masala vadai. So the basic masala vadai gets enhanced by adding minced/ ground banana flower to make it nutritious and healthy snack. Banana blossom is a healthy addition to our diet and mostly people don’t like it due to its taste so adding it such snack recipes will help both kids and adults relish it and get its benefits. I earlier posted vazhaipoo bajji recipe is again a delicious fritter which can also made at home easily if you are already bored with these vazhaipoo vadai. As I have mentioned in my earlier post patience is the key when dealing with banana blossom, but the benefits we get from consuming it are umpteen so do try recipes with banana blossom/ vazhaipoo when you have enough time. I cleaned the vazhaipoo/ banana blossom the before night to save time, once cleaned you can refrigerate it in plastic cover and it will be remain good for 2 days max. This vada can be served enough with sambar rice or with any South Indian lunch. So let’s get to the making!

- 1. Channa dal- 1 cup
- 2. Vazhai poo- 1 cup
- 3. Green chilli - 1
- 4. Ginger – 1 big chunk
- 5. Garlic pods – 2
- 6. Fennel seeds – ¼ tsp
- 7. Cumin seeds – ¼ tsp
- 8. Rice flour – ¼ cup
- 9. Salt – to taste
- 10. Oil – for deep frying
- * 1 cup = 235 ml
- Open the banana flower leaves one by one inside it you will find a batch of banana flowers which are edible. Now remove it gently from the banana blossom.
- Now pull the feathery plastic like petal back. Discard this feathery plastic petal as it is not edible.
- Now look for the matchstick like stem inside the flower and remove it as well. Discard this one too as it tastes bitter. Now repeat the process for each banana flower till you see tiny white part which can be eaten raw.
- Wash and soak channa dal in water for 3 hours.
- After 3 hours drain water from channa dal. In a blender add green chilli, saunf, cumin seeds, ginger, garlic, soaked chana dal and salt. Grind it corse without adding any water. Transfer it to a bowl.
- Now in the same blender add cleaned and washed vazhai poo and blend it coarse. Transfer this mixture to chana dal mixture. Now add chopped onion, curry leaves and rice flour. Mix well.
- Heat oil in a pan. Now take small portion of the mixture, make it into round shape, then flatten it pressing it slightly with palm.
- Now drop it preheated oil one by one and cook in medium flame to get even browning and cooked inside. When done transfer it to a plate with paper towel and serve.
How to make Vazhaipoo vadai with step by step images
