Fish puttu/ Fish bhurji/ Scrambled fish is a simple yet delicious South Indian style side dish prepared by adding scrambled fish in spicy and flavorful garlic onion mixture. Traditionally fish puttu is prepared with king fish which is super yummy but can be prepared with Tilapia too if you can’t get hold of King fish like me.

So that sums up that this fish puttu is prepared with tilapia fish fillet but other than that all the other traditional things have been followed in the recipe not to mention its preparation in clay pot just adds to its taste. I have recently posted many varieties of fish dishes like these:

Ingredients

  • Fish fillet – 2 nos./ 3 cups (chopped)
  • Onion – 1 (finely chopped)
  • Green chilli -2 to 3 (finely chopped)
  • Garlic – 1/ 1 tsp (finely chopped)
  • Ginger – 1 chunk/ 1 tsp (finely chopped)
  • Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp + ¼ tsp
  • Salt – to taste
  • Chilli powder – ¼ tsp
  • Oil – 1 tbsp
  • Curry leaves – a sprig

* 1 cup = 235 ml

How to make Fish puttu with step by step images


  1. Wash fish thoroughly (any fish), cut into pieces.
  2. Now apply salt and turmeric to the fish pieces.
  3. Boil 3 cups water in a pot and to it add the fish pieces with also little salt. Allow it to cook with lid on in medium flame. This should take about 5 minutes. When the fish looks cooked drain the water and keep the fish pieces aside.
  4. Now in a bowl add the cooked fish pieces and scramble it well using a fork. Keep it aside.
  5. Now apply oil thoroughly in the clay pot/ if using regular pan heat oil in it add finely chopped ginger and garlic. Saute well, when aromatic add curry leaves, finely chopped onion and green chilli. Saute well.
  6. When onions look sauteed add turmeric powder and chilli powder which is optional. Mix well. Now add the scrambled fish and required salt. Mix everything well. When everything looks combined put off the flame and serve it hot with rice and sambar.
