Sambar powder is a very aromatic, flavorful and spicy powder which can be prepared very easily at home with few basic ingredients. Sambar powder is one such key ingredient used in making sambar a very common and tasty south Indian gravy usually served with rice, idly, dosa, uttappam and many more dishes. Buying store brought is very easy, but grinding fresh powder to prepare food enhances the taste of the dish even more. This is my mom in law’s recipe and we don’t grind large amount as I feel the freshness and taste is little lost, so I make small batches every month (as I make only twice or thrice a month sambar) which we have been following all these years. But this is my personal opinion, and if you wish you can prepare it in large batch and store it. Below is the making video along with step by step images to make it easy for beginners. So lets get to the making!
The below mentioned measurement yields about 1 small cup sambar powder and can be used for 4- 5 times for a family with 2 members.
