Tomato poha / Tomato aval is again one such simple and easy recipe which can be prepared in no time. When you have tomato lovers at home, this recipe is going to be a real treat for them, but could be addictive even for non tomato lovers like me. Tomato poha is a spicy, little tangy and crunchy recipe with basic preparation and ingredients. The key to get perfect poha is soak poha only for 5 to 10 minutes as more soaking leads it to get soggy and always remember to use thick variety when making upma with poha. So lets get to the making!

Ingredients

  • Poha/ Aval – 1 ½ cup
  • Onion – 1
  • Tomato – 2
  • Green chilli – 2
  • Red chilli powder – 1 tsp
  • Coriander powder – ½ tsp
  • Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp
  • Cumin seeds – ¼ tsp
  • Mustard seeds – ½ tsp
  • Channa dal – 1 tsp
  • Urad dal – 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves – a spring
  • Oil – 1 tbsp

 


How to make tomato poha with step by step images

  1. Wash and soak poha for 10 minutes with little water. After 10 minutes drain the excess water and keep it aside.

  2. Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds, after it splutters, add cumin seeds, after it crackles add urad dal and channa dal, after it turns golden brown, add curry leaves, chopped onion and green chilli. Saute well.

  3. Now add chopped tomatoes, red chilli powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder and salt. Mix well and let the tomatoes cook.

  4. When the tomatoes look cooked add soaked poha. Mix well a little gently so that you don’t break poha or change its texture. Cover it with a lid and cook for 5 – 7 minutes with flame on low. When done put off the flame and serve it hot!
