Sago upma recipe, Javvarisi upma, Sabudana upma

Sago upma/ Javvarisi upma is a very easy recipe that can be prepared quickly for breakfast due to its simple making and ingredients. Sago upma is prepared by adding soaked sago in tempered onion mixture and cooked to perfection. Adding lemon juice enhances the taste of this dish even more. The only key to perfect upma is adding right amount of water while soaking sago, but otherwise this recipe can be easily made by beginners as well.  So lets get to the making!

Ingredients

  • Sago/ Javvarisi – 1 cup
  • Onion – 1
  • Green chilli – 2
  • Mustard seeds – ½ tsp
  • Urad dal – 1 tsp
  • Channa dal – 1 tsp
  • Peanuts – 6 to 8
  • Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp
  • Lemon – ½
  • Salt – to taste
  • Oil – 2 tsp
  • Curry leaves – a spring

How to make sago upma with step by step images

  1. Soak sago overnight or atleast 6 hours with water just to immerse sago. Make sure not add too much water as it will become soggy. So when you see in the morning the water should have been absorbed and sago should be easily mashable.

  2. Heat oil in a kadai/ pan add mustard seeds, after it crackles add urad dal, channa dal and peanuts, when dal turns golden brown add curry leaves, chopped onion and chopped green chilli. Saute well.

  3. Now add turmeric powder. Give it a quick stir and add soaked sago. Mix everything well. Keep fluffing the sago until it becomes transparent in color. Put off the flame and add lemon juice. Give it a good stir and serve it hot!
